Given that installing GNOME desktop and Base X via yum yields a
functioning desktop, I would assume that the driver is included with Fedora.

Well F16 seems to have drivers called "vmware" and "vmlegacy" and F17 has "vmware" only, all in the xorg-x11-drv-vmware package. Neither has a driver called "vmwgfx".
