We *finally* have a green light to open the code base to the world.
Here's the plan: we open up the code Monday morning (22 Aug 2005).
1. I'll do a bunch of web page work to add some needed info (open up
the nightly tarballs, how to get an SVN checkout, how to build from an
SVN checkout, etc.).
2. The "devel" mailing list will be open to anyone.
3. The SVN repository will be open for anonymous, read-only access to
anyone:
- Initially, only the /trunk will be available
- The 1.0 branch and all releases will become available when created
- We can open /tmp if developers want/need it (case-by-case basis?)
4. Tim will be giving an Open MPI talk at the Open IB workshop on
Monday and will announce both the Open IB work and the availability of
the code.
5. I'll send out a mail across the "announce" mailing list (335
subscribers!) on Monday with essentially the same info.
--> Some people feel that we should have a "beta 0" tarball available
at that time, mostly for marketing reasons (i.e., people will get a
warm fuzzy from seeing an "official" tarball available, even if it's an
early beta). Comments / thoughts on this?
We'll be branching/freezing the code for the 30 Sept 1.0 release in
about 1.5 weeks (i.e., end of Aug/beginning of Sept). We'll make more
beta tarballs throughout the month-long testing period (b1, b2, etc.)
to give users something progressively more stable to test with.
Sidenote: there does not seem to be any point in releasing the 0.9 beta
tarball. Our current level of performance on the trunk is much better
than the 0.9 beta, and the user experience is also a bit better.
