Usually you add something like this in .pro file. And please use .png.
desktopfile.files = $${TARGET}.desktop
desktopfile.path = /usr/share/applications
icon.files = $${TARGET}.png
icon.path = /path/whereyouwant/icon/tobe
INSTALLS += icon desktopfile
