It does, as I have shown you:

$ python --version
Python 2.7.12

There is nothing wrong with what Debian and Fedora are doing here. Their
system default is Python 2, reachable as python. They also install
versioned executables if you want something else.

Their env works, their python works, their python2 works, their python3
works. What exactly is it that you think they're doing wrong?
