I'm with you on not liking that behaviour... I assumed that since make World ran to completion, there were no errors. Turned out that the error was that X assumes that cpp is in /usr/bin/cpp (which since I removed the RH gcc and friends and installed from source was in /usr/local/bin/cpp.) I made a link to /usr/local/bin/cpp in /usr/bin/cpp and everything ran fine!
