Thanks, I hadn't spend much time looking at the WindowInfo structure, but from 
part of your description, it, in particular:

...may be giving me hints about questions to ask about folding.

For example, could there be a separate textBuf associated with a document and 
a window (well, I was assuming a window is a tab, but that may not be true 
either, but, continuing anyway...).  

If that were the case, hiding  folded portions of the document might be 
accomplished by leaving the folded (hidden) text in the textBuf associated 
with a document, but leaving / taking it out of a textBuf associated with a 
tab (i.e., a particular "display" or view of the document).

I guess that doesn't seem that likely, but I thought I'd mention it.
