I think the styleBuffer come into play, after NEdit decided what to draw. But folding must hook into this decision process, and not after. And for your second thought I think this would be a optimization at most. You must keep the folding information somewhere (ie. at least start/end, and this information can't be stored inside the styleBuffer), and this datastructure should also allow to query for folded/unfolded text.
