Two notes: Before I proceed, I know openzfs is in this thread, but I'm only
speaking pertaining to illumos. I am in meetings all week, and clearly the
shortness-of-cycles has and will show here.
I'm addressing 3 mails in one response.
Let's start with Udo:
> I fully understand that this is still a major problem in some countries,

And I think Garrett answers this well in the 2nd part of this paragraph:
> Minor suggestion: if the term race is not descriptive enough or is confusing,

The 1st part of this paragraph mentions ethnicity. I'm 100% not sure if I agree
it's better or not, and I'm 100% not sure because I'm not someone who gets to
experience the business end of "wrong ethnicity" or "wrong race" misbehavior.
Yeah, I'm a cis white male, and I understand the potential power imbalances
there.
. . .
Now on to Caleb, who points out:

Why do you think using the term race is sensitive? AFAICT we aren't using it as
a hammer to beat down anyone; we are using it to identify misbehavior patterns.

And this goes back to my admittedly snippy initial sentence:

You are correct, I do not unilaterally get to decide that. Because I'm only
volunteer right now for CoC *violations*, I might enagage in unilateral
decision-making in that space (violations), but we aren't there in this thread.
(BTW, a public correction should be addressed publically. Which is what I'm
doing now.)
I do think, and will fight strongly for it, that the CoC terms should stay
as-is. Race is a term people use in this space. It's used because the
derogatory behavior racism comes from the word race. One can argue the
scientific validity of race as a wholly accurate term, but as seen today, it's
there.
I asked why do you think using the term is sensitive, and knowing that would
help me and others understand more. I don't know anything about you much
beyond your picture of Rick from Rick & Morty, so additional clues might be
nice. Also, as mentioned before, my statements should only be applicable to
the illumos CoC. I have no say or sway on the OpenZFS one.
