Dear all, You are invited to take part in this event in London on Saturday August 22nd (see below). We'll be using various web based technology to collect data for the project; it should increase transparency in the use of CCTV surveillance. Best wishes, Andrew Wood (Oxford)
-------- Original Message -------- Subject: CCTV: Trust & Access Research Announcement Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2009 16:43:19 +0100 From: Mark Lizar <[email protected]> Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] . * * *Invitation to Audit The Infrastructure (PLEASE PASS ON)* Is surveillance actually threating our liberty? Threatening the quality of life in Britain? Or increasing, illegally, the cost of living through illegal parking fines from covert cameras? What is the state of digital information rights in Britain? Is anonymity now no longer a possibility in all contexts of your life? When is surveillance being used to profile citizens by the council, private security, the police? I am conducting a research event on Saturday August 22nd to audit Trust and Access' of CCTV systems of organisations in Hammersmith & Fulham. The intent is to research the transparency of the state of digital rights in Britain. * * For this purpose I am actively recruiting researchers and potential participants to take pictures of CCTV and security systems in order to submit variations of subject access and freedom of information requests in Hammersmith & Fulham. These are request that can use law to audit the personal information management practices of CCTV systems and their operators. *Where* *The Old Firstation Pub* Hammersmith Broadway on Sheppards Bush Rd London, London W6 79L United Kingdom *When* Show up at 1:00 pm to get the research information kit, ending with a get together in Sheppards Bush. To register and show your support or become an honorary researcher *signup here* <http://www.eventbrite.com/event/401970304> To get more information visit the research website http://www.identitytrustcic.org/cctv *Please Pass this Invitation Onwards: * See the event unfold and follow this event on twitter @identitytrust *Some Background:* This research is the core research for an MSc in Social Research Methods applied to digital identity and the regulation of CCTV. This research repeats and progresses research conducted in Hammersmith & Fulham in 2002 by the Urban Eye project which has defined the media surrounding CCTV surveillance in Britain used by the media. Prepatory research started in April 2009 into surveillance transparency included a Freedom of Information Request submission to Hammersmith & Fulham, in which the Borough refused and refused again on appeal, that is has now been escalated to the Information Commissioner which brings into question whether Hammersmith & Fulham is systematically violating the Human Rights and The Data Protection Act. *How To Support This Initiative* We are asking participants to consider donating £10.00 pounds to pay for an access request audit as each business audit has this fee. If there is a CCTV system you are especially concerned about please consider donating for multiple requests for this system. Please also actively pass this email to card carrying journalists, the use of surveillance is threating to create a state security subculture that is paranoid about being surveilled. This threatens fundamental freedoms, like the freedom of the press!! *Issues To Be Curious About (and worth discussing)* - In what way does the nature of CCTV surveillance change as these systems become digital and networked? This needs public debate! - The surveillance paranoia observed when people are discouraged to note take pictures of police or security systems including CCTV needs public debate? Does this threaten the freedom of the press, and the freedom of assembly? - The lack of a court order needed for councils to use CCTV surveillance to catch people for petty crimes and bylaws! The use of Terroists law for profiling of people in the community is an incredible surveillance power and needs proper controls. Is this activity a violation of human rights? - What is the difference between CCTV crime prevention and CCTV for crime prosecution? This requires a public debate. As one makes people safer and one increases the threat of abuse and making people less safe. If anyone would like to help strengthen this initiative please feel welcome to pitch in.
