I wonder if there's a google API that might be useful, at least for someone with a Google AdSense/AdWords account? Google Ad pricing is an odd mixture of ex post and ex ante - what you pay depends on how many clickthroughs are achieved, but the price per clickthrough is determined by an auction mechanism. What the parties finally pay is determined more by the degree of success of the advertising than by how much they are willing to spend. Interestingly, their Search-Based Keywords tool gives a visual indication of how much is being bid for particular keywords. I searched for Gordon Brown and labour.org.uk: http://www.google.com/sktool/#keywords?q=Gordon%20Brown http://www.google.com/sktool/#keywords?sort=competition&q=Gordon%20Brown gives the list sorted by demand. No.1 is currently "Gordon Brown mask" and the highest price is "Gordon Brown caricature" In inevitable bipartisanship, I note that the top for David Cameron and conservatives.com is this charlatan: http://www.google.com/search?q=david%20cameron%20gikandi "David Cameron Bullingdon" is also in the top five. If we could track changes over time, that might be interesting. No doubt they will be officially pissy about screenscraping it. -- The only thing worse than e-mail disclaimers...is people who send e-mail to lists complaining about them
