I think we've established that it does need some kind of user interaction at 
the beginning and end of the journey; the "constant monitor" idea has too many 
pitfalls (battery life, privacy, signal/noise, i.a.)

Or just refuse to let you press the button until it's got a reasonable GPS fix, 
in which case you don't need to select the stop at all; you just need to get 
into the habit of launching the app before the bus pulls up.

That would actually be an advantage of the QR code idea (which I can see would 
require a lot more hard work and cooperation with transport authorities), but 
if the user gets her phone out to scan the QR code, it can be busy getting a 
GPS fix while the information comes down from the server, which is then sent 
back to the server along with a timestamp when she hits the "getting on the bus 
now" button.
