Is there any reason why mySociety has chosen to go with a system which 'requires' users to sign up for a Google account? It seems odd for a group which promotes openness to sign up with a US company that isn't great at protecting users' privacy and does its best to avoid paying tax on its UK earnings.

Thankfully though you don't have to sign into Google to subscribe to most groups, you can just send an email to the list address with +subscribe appended to the local part (e.g. [email protected]) and that will do the trick (and the opposite with +unsubscribe).
