Hi all. I normally don't interfere with your discussions. But in this case I would like to make a contribution, because decisions in this aspect will have great impact on the future direction of MMBase.
Lately several organisations have asked The Foundation to advise them on generic, modular, component-based MMBase-development. Personally I think it's great to have a well developed MMBase-chat, poll-function, etc. There could even be more than one MMBase-poll. Although not 25, simply because there is no way to guarantee future compatibility for so many applications/components. In my view, the (group of) organisations that initiated the building of a 'component' could be the group to "vote" on bugfixes, adding functionality, etc. Of course, in close cooperation with the developers community / MMC. You could e.g. be asked to give a second opinion on every next development step and have a veto-right. Everyone would still be free to use any other poll available, but we would have a 'default' and upward compatible MMBase-poll, build robust en generic, well documented, etc. The developers community would thus be able to concentrate on the core development. The Foundation would like to discuss the issue with all parties involved. And of course examine the possibilities of hosting the MMBase-components (CVS, proposals for adding functionality, bugfixes, documentation, etc). This could be an issue on the upcoming MMEvent3: June 4, 2003 in The Hague (more information next week). Or on a special meeting to be held soon. Your suggestions are most welcome. Kind regards, Jo. But I think it is useful to discuss this first. So, I suggest to void the call and use this thread for discussion of how applications should be implemented (in CVS, and relating to dependencies etc) before we call a final vote on it. I am fine if the distro project decides on it, btw. But I think that project has not had a meeting for over a year. -- Pierre van Rooden Mediapark, C 107 tel. +31 (0)35 6772815 "Never summon anything bigger than your head."
