My advise would be: stick with the stable release version. It will
provide you with a sound and stable base for experimentation and
learning.
If you would use the latest build from CVS, bugs and undocumented new
features will interfere with your learning process. 

Regardless of the big changes coming up, the next major release will
generally provide backward compatibility with the stable release. 
Once you are comfortable with the stable release, you'll find it much
easier to migrate to the next one by the time it becomes available.
