I think so far the first has been more or less the general idear. Perhaps it's time to take a broader view. An early adaptation of this concept is e-id's portal ibrium, and to some extend Quantiq's tumbo. The latter has an interesting concept of plugable services. by delegating responsibilities to those services the core can be kept small and focused. Ernst
