Sorry ill -1 or veto it if we at this time don't look at this in as a more general problem. I would love to see a way we can run mmbase as a war but if we change the way we read/write config files lets tackle the whole problem or alteast have a idea of how to solve this. This for example kills the whole package manager since i can't write to the config dir anymore (since there is no way i can ask mmbase for a allowed place to write the files).
I understand your problem. I don't think confiruation has to be stored in xml, there shoud be a java interface to add configuration. While talking to michiel we "found out" that there are 2 types of configuration stuff like builders (for wich there is only 1 file). but there are also more files that needs "merging" when an other file is found. Think of stuff like the functions framework or the web.xml. If the files are not "per definition" xml it's possible for a package manager to add/create the configuration on every startup and feed it to MMBase. I would like you to rephrase your -1 by requireing that is't possible to alter /add configuration on a runnig mmbase. (I hope we will be able to store such configuration in mmbase).
