The related tag does similar things, but I think it is conceptually harder. I always prefer mm:relatednodes if possible, certainly if I would use <mm:node element in it. Nested mm:relatednodes may impose a performance penalty if deep and many nodes. I'm planning to make that better, based on the functionality of tree-tag. See also my other reply.
