Hello Pat,

Have you checked the underlying database tables?  If it is not a 
case of loss of data, then may be it could be a configuration 
mismatch.

Also there is a white paper available in Technet about upgradation. 
It was published as late as in Sept this year. Have you referred 
that?

  I am experiencing a problem with the upgrade from 2.5 sp1 to 3.0
