This appeared to be caused by my cheap hub having only one "Transaction Translator" (TT). I got a new hub, with one TT per port, which seemed to solve that issue (though that hub had other problems, so I've hardly used it so far...).
Anyway, if you're looking for a new hub, you might want to get one with multiple TT's. Unfortunately, this is hardly ever advertised, but I think you can see in the output of "dmesg" how many TT's there are. Gr. Matthijs
