I guess (though this does not seem to hold for all Access Points).

Possibly that is for using WDS (Wireless Distribution System), which is
the "official" way to do a wifi-bridge mode. WDS is not currently
supported (and often differntly implemented by some vendors), instead
the 2.0n wifi driver includes a sort of layer 2 NAT solution as an
alternative.

It's good to know that, with some access points, this configuration does
not work, so thanks for reporting back.
