Here I see samba is still running, so the problem is not samba dying.
Did you try restaring samba with /etc/fonstated/RestartSamba and did
that help?

This is weird, I've never seen logread not print the log messages right
away. I'm not sure what is going on here.

If the problem occurs again, could you try the "dmesg" command in
addition to the "logread" command? That should show only the kernel
messages instead of all log messages, but if logread blocks somehow,
it's likely to be some issue in the kernel anyway.
