Hi, Last of my "lunch with Philip" series - another idea is to consider all devices seen before 2009 (or another date) as legacy.
If we can collect some old server logs that include User-Agent values, we could declare all these devices (in a 2012 web context) as uninteresting, so the only metadata that we'd store for those is "that device is legacy". Most modern websites will probably want to serve a basic "require nothing from the client" page for such old devices, and their number must be going down quickly anyway. WDYT? -Bertrand
