MySQL access to internal network

Im trying to play with mysql a little with some developmental work, But I
cant figure out how to get access to it.

Using TCP from my workstation i get a 'not allowed to connect' message, by
using an ssh tunnel I get the same message but for the hostname of the
e-smith server.

Can someone point me the right way?
