I am running 4.1.1 :-)
What I don't understand is why this problem cropped up in 4.1.1 (its a clean
install)
Will removing verbose remove the dots, but keep other important messages?

A number of ways.
1. Never receive any email. :-)
2. Upgrade to 4.1.1.
3. Create a custom template for /etc/fetchmail, and omit the "--verbose".
