I'm also in backwater Australia. I'm on the end of a phone line that runs
26,400 at Cedar Grove (out toward Beaudesert). I run a permanent connection
via Brisnet (brisnet.org.au), it's $60 a month plus 19c a meg. It's a
non-profit co-op deal. The whole network is made up of guys like us with a
mix of machines. If you have a problem you always get to talk to someone
who knows what they're on about.
It's the best deal that I've been able to get (I've had faster connections
but the throughput is better).
