I found that modifying the passwd chat line in smb.conf to (all in one line)

passwd chat = *New*UNIX*password* %n\n *Retype*new*UNIX*password* %n\n 
*Enter*new*UNIX*password* %n\n *Retype*new*UNIX*password* %n\n 
*passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully* 

works fine and also changes the Unix password, in addition to the SMB password.
