Hot swappable IDE RAID1 is next to impossible to implement on SME. There are limited products available and drivers for the SME kernel version are at best rare. Worst is some manufacturers do not even provide source to rebuild their drivers for the SME kernel :-<
When I was at Comdex I found a product that implements hot swappable IDE RAID1 without the need for Linux drivers. I've been testing the MRS Raid Sub-System model SB-C98. This unit provides hardware IDE RAID 1 for two hot swappable HDD. The unit fits in 2 x 5.25" external drive bays so perfect for a => 2U rackmount or any => minitower chassis. Cost for this unit is only $350.00 CAD ($225.00 USD). They also have models to meet almost any installation requirement. I've tested this by unplugging drives, switching drives, basically done everything but hold this unit under water ;-> It works great! Never a system stop and the autorebuild feature simply starts rebuilding the moment the replacement drive is inserted and locked into position. IMHO this solution warranted a devinfo announcement. Hopefully everyone will agree :-) Visit here for details: http://myezserver.com/mrs-raid.html Contact me directly if you are interested in receiving a unit for testing. I will offer a 30 day eval return policy and I am very interested in getting some live, in-use feedback.
