This is really the same thing you see with a classic inside/outside mail
relays with a firewall between them. The outside relay accepts anything
for the domain since it isn't aware of the users, then as it attempts to
forward to the internal mailhub, rejected mail generates a postmaster
notification on the relay server. Without the relay, it would be the
sender's server that generated the error message/return for refused
messages. The smtpd relay is performing the same function as the
'outside' relay and if it accepts messages for unknown users then it
must process the notifications when qmail rejects them. With qmail's
focus on security, do you really need smtpd - especially since it doesn't
support esmtp?
