I was searching around for some clues on trying to solve the single most mind- bending detail of putting together a linux-based NAS box - the holy grail, if you will - SPA (Single Point of Authentication).
I came across an interesting article that I'd like to share with you in hopes that there's a few of you out there that would like to try and tackle this monster and use the SME server as a base for a linux-based NAS server that can easily be deployed into an existing network (Linux, Window$ or otherwise.) The link is a press release from a San (no pun intended) Francisco based company called linuxcare that has developed an open-source package that addresses Unified File Locking to make samba more robust. Additionally, they claim to have developed a package called WinBind that allows a new linux device to recognize all the users on the network, make the NAS product available to one or multiple NT domains and to provide access to storage. http://www.linuxcare.com/about-us/press-center/press-release/2001/01-23-01- samba.epl Like I said... if you're interested in tackling this rather tricky monster with me, please let me know. I've got some ideas but the know-how ain't all there. (The lights are one but no one's home?) ;-) Cheers!
