suggests that "acm" is the appropriate xxxx. There is also a suggestion of what you need in the dial init string, to enable DOV and 128k - "!T0=0!T4=1".
after the following changes i have the usb modem working telstra NT1 plus II on sme6b3 the performance was terrible, don't know why modem lights reported single and dual channels modes were working wget only gave 3K/s on ttyS0 i get 7 or 11
add ln -s /dev/input/ttyACM0 /dev/ttyACM0
plug in the usb cable and i'm rewarded with

pico -w /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0
comment out this line #'OK' 'ATL0M0'
i currently use 'OK' 'ATZ!Z=9!T0=0!T2=1' T4=1 sometimes forces 128 and won't release the second line maybe just a fluke so i'm still playaing with the settings
pico -w /etc/diald.conf
device /dev/ttyACM0
speed 115200 ? pick a higher number ?
