In case any one is curious, a upgrade of my kernel (to 2.4.18) and glibc (to 2.2.2-6.1mdk) seems to have solved the problem. Whatever Mandrake 8.0 came with must have been a little buggy--maybe it's related to the Promise-based PCI IDE controller I have my freenet drive plugged into. Who knows?
