I have seen one of three options on trying to load a normal webpage that
does not exist:

1) regular dumb 404 error that pops up the default 404 browser error
message (eg. freenetproject.org )

2) a popup comes up saying that the connection is refused (eg.
www.gnome.org )

3) a "customised" 404 error that says something like "Sorry about the
web page not existing but here is a link to the homepage or an email
address for someone that you can complain to" (eg. slashdot.org )

Never ever does it just *silently* go to the default page. It may
redirect to a new page but that new URL will then be in the location bar
... not the wrong one that was entered initially. Perhaps option number
3 is something that fproxy could do instead with the map file.
