I tend to agree, I would greatly prefer a simple elegant site which didn't try to use any whiz-bang features of the very latest browsers.
Another important issue to be considered is how easy it will be for people to update the website. It is counter-productive for only one, or a small number of people, to be able to edit the site. This was the original motivation behind going for TWiki, although that may have been taking it too far in retrospect.
