I recently played with a neat new P2P app created by a friend of mine (one of the guys behind LimeWire). The thing that really caught my eye was the simplicity of the installation process (at least on a Mac). If Freenet could even get close to this level of simplicity of installation, our userbase would expand exponentially. This software was created by a team of just two guys, and AFAIK its written in Java. Here it is:

I see no reason why Freenet's installation process couldn't be as elegant as littleshoot's.
