And if I remember correctly, bootstrapping has always been slow and still is, so that experience sucks. A huge aspect of that is that we have very few seednodes and the existing ones are therefore overloaded. Also, having more seednodes would improve opennet security quite a bit as they are a single point of failure somehow - having very few makes opennet a rather centralized system. This could be fixed by automatically enabling seed-mode on nodes if they are suitable. They need an open opennet port, and sufficient bandwidth. Those seednodes are of course useless if they are not in seednodes.fref. So the second aspect would be to write some kind of crawler which searches the network for those seednodes. There is a bugtracker entry for seednode harvesting which probably explains more aspects of that.
