Having just encountered:

in a mail message, I thought it appropriate to ask if there is
any serious development discussion going on in IRC that I might
want to know about.  For simple questions like the above, IRC
is probably a good medium, but it sucks for serious discussion
about the product.  For one thing, important team members are
on opposite sides of the big pond, there is no archive of IRC
discussions, less time to reasearch and consider responses, and
last but not least, a lot of people like me who consider IRC or
any other form of instant messaging a complete waste of time
that we don't ever intend to get involved with (Well, OK, I play
IRC poker now and then--but I don't chat even there).
