If the document is to be publicly accessible (that is other than by only
those in possession (or capable of getting possession) of some cryptokey),
it's name or descriptor must somehow be available. That is quite different
from it's location(s), and I suspect a separate mechanism is used.
There is no reason to invoke a central database or even a trail. A ripple
search would work - "I need mp3\*\Goldberg variations\j s Bach" "I haven't
got it, I'll ask my neighbours" "Here you are" exactly as with a distributed
caching mechanism.
My smart agent would locally and temporarily keep names that the system
knows about ("The following versions of the Goldberg variations are
available, and here are the reviews")

As I said, I'm a newbie, and I'm sure others can answer better...

Jack,
read your email with interest, I to am new to this but found you issues
quite pertinent althought I have two questions.

firstly, given the nature of the data (encrypted) are you abidicating that
the descriptor information should be a representation of the encrypted data
or the normal data. I ask because this obviously has a relation to the size
of the descriptor field itself and the scalability of the database later.

secondly, given the nature of the data transmission (where its needed most
and decentralised) how do you envisage the data base search actually
working? Are we talking about a document originating at one node and every
time it moves a central index being updated or are we talking about leaving
a crumb whereever the document goes saying where it moved to?
Obviously the second method means that after a while the retreival of the
document would become tiresome as you woiuld have to pass through many nodes
to get it.
