As an old computer operator myself, I found that story particularly

Yah.  There's no doubt that such things should be highly configurable.
For something as critical as a server log, an event-analysis program
should be able to trigger a wide range of announcement types: background
sounds, updates in a little xload-like display, beeps, popup windows,
e-mail messages, and in some cases even auto-dialing a pager number.
'Same concept as the existing "build is broken" CVS e-mail messages.

Of course, it's easy to imagine the disasterous results possible when a
malfunctioning system falls into infinite-spam mode.  Fortunately, these
are easy to fix: "It's a simple matter of programming."  :-)
