I agree with Brandon and other recent comments, I think the new design
direction looks promising and is certainly an aesthetic improvement over the
existing site.

Since I am pretty much responsible for the current design (for better and
for worse) let me caution you regarding a few of the design constraints I
had in mind with the current iteration of the site design.

I designed the overall framework of the current site to be low to no images
so that...
    a) it would be reasonably accessible worldwide not just in
        the hi-bandwidth West.
    b) both content >and< navigation elements would be translatable--
using images for navigation in sidebars would hinder site
        translation to other languages.

The extent to which these elements are important in any redesign hasn't
really been discussed, but probably should before things more forward in
earnest. I think translations are important--the php scripts that run the
site are built with translations in mind. That having been said, I think
we've been hindered by the CVS learning curve for potential translators.
I'm not sure of any easy way around that other than to hope those willing to
translate are also willing and motivated enough to learn to use CVS.

There are reasons why the site is as it is. But there is more reason with
the release of .5 that the site should be reworked and improved in as many
ways as possible.

All the best,
Rick
