If I didn't understand the point of the previous post,
  I beg your pardon.

I'm naive in java, but me too had minor problems with kaffe,
not when building freenet (I never attempt that) but
when building a Kaffe version that work with Freenet 0.3.

All I need to do is to follow intruction in the README
0.3 file, and to tweak a Kaffe function about time (I think
it was due to an installation problem on my linux box,
not to a general problem) and to use gmp3 as gmp
library. After that all runs fine and the kaffe jvm
put a far minor load on the cpu in respect to
  sun 1.3.1_2

Anyway, IMHO, it is *important* that Freenet *run*
with kaffe, not that build with it.
