If you're going to implement FEC, please use the mechanism given in the metadata spec; namely having the check keys being XORs of patterns of data keys. Once you have the infrastructure to do this in general, the only hard part is figuring out what pattern of data keys to XOR together to make the check blocks.
The best way I know of creating a pattern is, unfortunately, patented in the US, so we have to stay away from that, but I'm doing research on various other ways to structure things for optimal chances of recovery.
