In the future I intend to run the node on a different computer so 
the "Insert Files" box is essentially completely useless if the file I 
want to insert is on the machine running the node.

It defaults to the node's current working directory which is about the 
only directory (besides the user's $HOME) that we know the location 
of. "C:\" isn't available everywhere, neither is "/mnt/shared."
