Well there is Google talk which is an IM (well it's basically jabber
with a colourful interface)

Talk implies it's like a real conversation where you immediately get a
respond, board, forum, use* refer to somthing the user (probably)
already knows about and assumes they have no real time implication.

There may be people out there who understand irony but I agree that it
is something we can't rely on.

So the best name I see so far is the "freeboard" proposed by Michael Rogers
