I cannot follow, how a build system results in more eyes watching the code or 
doing other things.

And maven-based build-system are horrible to package, on gentoo side, we 
usually create a build.xml
for ant and build that way since maven is way more complex. So from my point of 
view as packager, i
am completly against a move to a more complex build system, while the current 
one works fine.
