I remember 2 years ago I tried to run (or compile? I'm not that sure) XWiki with OpenJDK, the default java in ubuntu. It wasn't working out of the box. I also remember guiding other XWiki beginners later to install the sun jdk (on ubuntu) because the default OpenJDK didn't do it.
