SENTIENT BEINGS
ARE NUMBERLESS;
I VOW TO SAVE THEM
This is the first of the four Great
Vows, a set of paradoxes that embody
the spirit of Mahayana Buddhism,
the
school of Buddhism whose traditional
home is
Tibet, China, Vietnam, Korea, and Japan.
For Buddhists concerned about environmental
decline, the first Great Vow is taking on a sadder
and sadder resonance. Tens of thousands of species
are now probably going extinct every year as a result
of human activities. (We have only a rough idea of the
number of extinctions because we can't count the dying
species directly; for the most part, we have to infer
extinctions from rates of habitat loss.) This global spasm
of extinction has no parallel within the human experience,
and only five clear precedents within the entire history of
life. If it continues unabated, this crisis may eventually
surpass the last great extinction spike, 65 million years
ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period, when the
dinosaurs died out. It's estimated that in the aftermath
of previous mass extinctions, it took 10 million to 100
million years for the Earth's biological wealth to
"rebuild" itself. Similarly, our actions today—for good or
ill-will affect the course of life for eons to come. We are
living at a unique moment in the history of our species.
From a Buddhist perspective, you could say that the
single greatest issue of our times is: how shall we
interpret the first Great Vow?
THE FOUR GREAT VOWS
• Sentient beings are numberless;
I vow to save them.
• Desires are inexhaustible;
I vow to put an end to them.
• The Dharmas [Buddhist teachings]
are boundless;
I vow to master them.
• The
Buddha Way is
unattainable;
I vow to attain it.
