There's code in the NetBSD import of the ISC DHCP client that does
that.   You might want to use it as a model.   The current version is
at:

  ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-current/src/usr.sbin/dhcp/client/dhclient.c

I haven't incorporated this into the ISC release because I don't want
to have to deal with signaling incompatibilities, and also because I'm
not convinced that all the NetBSD dhclient.c code is entirely correct
(but it does seem to work).
