Thanks for the replies.  It turns out the the problem was I put the device
at the very end of the kernel config file.  When I compiled again with it
next to all the other pseudo-devices it all worked fine.

No, that's all you need to do.   Are you sure you're *running* the
kernel you built, and that you built the kernel for the configuration
file you made?   This is the only thing I can think of.   Hm, unless
you're not running the client as root or something.
