I'm currently working on adding preferences that are saved in
~/.diarc. Among these are default grid properties. After i've done
this i'll probably add grid data from the 'first' diagram view to the
saved file.

Exactly what do you mean here? Do you mean grouped objects or
multi-selected objects?
Grouped object are always snapped to the grid at the upper left
corner.
When you select several objects and move them (with snap-to-grid on)
only the one you drag is snap:ed to the grid, and the rest keep the
distance and positions relatively to the moved object.
How do you think is should be?
