saving a Dia file

Today I used the Dia tool for the first time. It worked fine, except
that I cannot reload a saved Dia file
(saved with Save as ...). The saved file is apparently in xml format
(starting with <?xml version="1.0"?>  etc.
Dia gives an error message ... Not a Dia file. Any idea what goes wrong?
